Flickr adds video uploads for all

Posted in awesome stuff, social media tools. on Tuesday, March 3rd, 2009 by Ryan

Part of what makes the Flickr Pro account so appealing is not only that you can upload an unlimited number of pictures, but also the ability to upload video. Recently, Flickr announced that it will now allow all users to upload up to 90 seconds of video whether you’ve got a Pro account or not.

Pro members need not worry, Flickr has added two new features, the ability to upload videos in HD and the Flickr Clock pool and timeline view. Here’s a shot of the timeline view:

Kakul Srivastava, Flickr’s General Manager, says:

“We want to see what the rest of the community has to share, so we are extending the ability to upload video to all of our members … Video, like photos, is quickly moving beyond a means to simply preserve memories and into a social activity that allows people to communicate and connect. As more devices have the ability to capture both, we’re seeing Flickr members capture videos along with photos to share their view of the world.”

This is a great move by Flickr. Allowing users to upload video may keep users there where before they may use another service. We’ll have to wait and see what the Flickr community thinks of the added features and how and in what capacity will they use it.

What do you think?

I always enjoy a good Flickr update. Even though I may not use it as much as other people I still love the format it gives for viewing and commenting. I think thats a great base to start from, and anything they add makes it a bit better. They're moving in a good direction with the video.
